Biographical note
Lloyd Garrison was born in 1903 and attended high school in Twin Falls, Idaho. Graduating from the University of Northern Colorado with a BS in 1926, he taught and was a school principal for the next six years in Las Animas, Colorado. He received his Ph.D from Yale University in 1940.
He arrived at the Amache Internment Camp in 1943 to take up his post as Superintendent of Schools, where he remained until 1945.
Hildred Garrison was born in 1901 and attended high school in Sioux City, Iowa. She received a BA in Sociology from the University of Northern Colorado in 1927. She married Lloyd Garrison in 1928.

Scope and content
The materials in this collection document several of the activities in the life of the Amache War Relocation Camp, Granada, Colorado, from 1943 to 1945.
A number of of the students letters discuss the cancellation of a football game against a nearby high school due to racial discrimination.
There is student written play "New Pioneers in America", an issue of the "Granada Pioneer", the student yearbook the "Onlooker" and a U.S. government report "Education Program in War Relocation Centers." There are also examples of the camp's silk-screen work.
There are also photographs from the camp, and a 45 minute interview with Mrs. Lloyd Garrison.

1981 Interview of Hildred Garrison
March 26,1981 approximately 45 minutes in duration:
Mildred Garrison relates the circumstances of her involvement with the Amache Relocation Center as the wife of Lloyd Garrison, Superintendent of Schools at Amache. Major focus within the conversation is placed on the role of the schools within the center, changes in attitude toward the Japanese by local Coloradans, and living conditions of the evacuees within the center. Some attention is also given to the social and economic activities of the Japanese during their internment at the center and how this affected the staff of the relocation center as well as local people.
