Historical sketch
This collection was assembled by Henry Tuoc V. Pham of Denver, Colorado.
During the 1980s, as President of the Vietnamese American Cultural Alliance of Colorado he collected samples of Vietnamese magazines, newspapers, and newsletters. He concentrated on title published in the United States, but there is a small sample of titles from other countries.
Pham published "A Bibliography of Vietnamese Magazines, Newspapers, and Newsletters Published in the United States and Other Countries = Muc-luc tap-chi, bao-chi thong-tin xuat-ban o hoa-ky va the-gioi." This bibliography is present in the collection.
Scope and content
The collection consists of samples of Vietnamese language magazines, newspapers, and newsletters.
Pham numbered the titles consecutively. Magazines are #1-55, newspapers #56-89, newsletters #90-110. Numbers 11 through 135 are titles published in other countries.
There are 10 states, the District of Columbia, and four foreign countries represented:
43 - California
28 - Colorado
4 - Texas
3 - Florida
3 - Missouri
3 - Virginia
2 - District of Columbia
2 - Kansas
2 - West Germany
1 - Alabama
1 - Australia
1 - Belgium
1 - France
1 - Illinois
1 - New Jersey
These are not complete runs of periodicals, but merely samples. 34 titles have multiple issues, but the collection is primarily single issues. The collection is not complete. There are 40 titles for which there is no sample. Most of those are from Series 4: Published in Other Countries.
A cursory examination of OCLC's WorldCat reveals that less than one-fourth of the titles are cataloged.
